Japanese Tetris clones fall into two distinct categories: The commercial variety takes the form of coin-ops or console games.
| Columns (Sega) | Coin-Op, Genesis | 90 | Sega |
| Columns II | Coin-Op | Sega | |
| Dr. Mario | Coin-Op, Famicom | Nintendo | |
| Bubble Bath Babes | NES | 91 | Panesian |
| Puyo Puyo | Coin-Op | 92 | Sega/Compile |
| Poitto! | 93 | Metro/Able | |
| Tetris Plus | 95 | Jaleco | |
| Aquarium | 96 | Excellent Systems | |
| Cleopatra Fortune | Taito | ||
| Tetris Plus 2 | 97 | Jaleco | |
| Tetris: The Grand Master | 98 | Arika |
Currently all the Japanese freeware Tetris clones I have are for 16-bit Windows. I guess there are probably some for Macintosh too.

Tetris | 91 | Yutaka Emura |
| Tile | ![]() |
Columns | V.J.Catkick | |
| NumLis | ![]() |
94 | Kaoru Kusunoki |
You will find that regardless of whether they are commercial or freeware, the Columns variety (and its spin-off Dr. Mario) is more popular than classic Tetris.
